Learning Goals for the Major in History
History majors at MMC will demonstrate the ability to:
- Place ideas, movements, and cultural forms past and present in historical context.
- Employ skills directly associated with historical method (primary and secondary research, analysis of sources, evaluation of evidence, argumentation, and historical writing and presentation.
- Make connections between diverse areas of historical investigation and synthesize these areas within a coherent program of study.
About the Major in History
- A “module” is equivalent to two courses that are connected by their content and historical approach.
- The History major includes the History core module and five other two-course modules, which come from one to five of the areas of inquiry listed below.
- No more than five courses in the History major can also count towards another major.
- No more than two courses may also count towards a minor.
- Courses that compose a module within one area of inquiry may not count within another.
- At least 18 credits in the major must be earned at the 300 level or higher.
- Students may not take more than three courses from Art History (ART designation) toward the History major.
History Core Module (6 credits)
Capstone Experience
History majors may satisfy the capstone requirement in one of three ways:
- By engaging in an extended research project appended to one upper-level course, arranged in agreement between the faculty advisor and instructor.
- By taking the Capstone Seminar course in a relevant discipline, with approval of the major advisor and instructor.
- By arranging an Independent Study with an individual faculty member that culminates in a major research project.
- The capstone experience will be considered part of a module that contributes to the required total of credits for the major (36).
- The capstone experience can only be undertaken after the History core is completed.
