IS 337 Russia: From Peter the Great to Putin

In this course students will acquire an understanding of the political, economic, social, cultural and ideological components of Russian history from the period of Peter the Great to the contemporary era.  Students will investigate Russia’s historically ambivalent relationship with the Western world and how this has conditioned Russia’s current politics, culture and foreign relations. Specific attention will be given to trends in Russian political leadership in the Tsarist period, the Soviet Union and the post-Soviet governments.
