AIP 322 Historical Perspectives in Natural Science (NP)

This course will provide a framework for understanding the natural world through examination of major milestones in the history of science. It will cover developments in physics, chemistry, and biology from ancient to contemporary times, with emphasis on the historical events and cultural biases that have shaped scientific modes of thought and practice. The discussions will focus on the historical and philosophical roots of scientific theories, along with the seminal roles played by creative individuals whose revolutionary ideas led to successive paradigm shifts in science through the ages. Through exposure to this historical perspective, students will develop an ability to think critically about scientific topics.
