AIP 318 The Foundations of Anglo-American Law (CP, IP)

This course will explore early English law and medieval English history in order to understand the English contribution to U.S. jurisprudence.  Along with the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, the Magna Carta is one of the foundational documents of the Anglo-American legal tradition.  The Magna Carta is most often remembered as a document that protects liberty. The path by which a single sheet of Latin script from the early thirteenth century became the contemporary symbol of human rights is a fascinating one.  The course will also examine the enduring influence of the Magna Carta on American legal and political philosophy.   This course may include a ten-day Study-Abroad component.
