ART 325 Caravaggio, Bernini, and Baroque Art in Rome
This course studies the painting, sculpture, and architecture of Rome in the Baroque era. It introduces the recent past of Rome in the 16th century and assays the continued importance of Ancient Rome for the development of the Imperial/Papal capital. It explores the development of early Baroque painting, with a focus on Caravaggio, the Carracci, and their followers, as well as Bernini, covering the entirety of his illustrious career. The course covers painting, sculpture, architecture, musical culture, graphic arts and other media, and includes visits to local collections where students will be introduced to some of the leading professionals in the field.
