ART 335 Studio Lighting

This course is a comprehensive study of the essential role lighting plays in a variety of situations.  Through a series of demonstrations, hands-on exercises, and assignments students will become proficient using continuous light sources and electronic strobes within the photography studio environment.  Students will also become familiar with color temperature, filtration, and lighting ratios to craft desired lighting effects. Lighting techniques include Rembrandt lighting, butterfly lighting, available light, outdoor light during the day and night, speed lights, and continuous light sources.  Accessories including light meters, umbrellas, soft boxes, gels and flags will be used to enhance and modify lighting effects, direction and the quality of light. Students will master in-class demonstrations and related homework assignments, become familiar with contemporary photographic practices that will provide an opportunity to create dramatic portraits, evocative fashion images, photo-based documentary storytelling.
