EWL 306 Literature of the Pacific

This course introduces students to a variety of works of literature written primarily by indigenous Pacific Islanders.  Themes that will be explored include: place and identity; cultural norms and ideals; and experiences of diaspora, assimilation, alienation, colonialism, nationalism and marginalization.  Attention will be paid to reading selected texts as pieces of literature, with careful analysis of their poetic and narrative forms.  At the same time, these texts will be framed within the complex and often contentious historical and cultural context of this region.
