THTR 328 The Arts & Social Change

Can the arts change the world? This course explores how the arts have challenged social and political structures and can be used as a tool for social change. Through contextual readings (of plays, performance texts, historical documents, and theory), and experiencing art (visual arts, film, video, spoken word, dance, music and theatre performances), students will study the ways in which systems of power, privilege and oppression are presented and resisted in these works. In addition to critical and creative writing assignments, students will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with a local community organization to design a short arts project that addresses a relevant social justice issue. Students will explore a variety of arts activities, techniques and strategies (forum and newspaper theatre, community murals, street performances, documentary video, hip-hop) and reflect on the leadership role of the artist in a community-based project.
