THTR 232 Theatre Design Foundations
This course is an introduction to the elements of visual language and the underlying principles of theatrical design. Approaches to theatrical design are studied with reference to elements of composition, color theory, script breakdown and analysis, research and concept development. The student will develop the ability to synthesize the intellectual and intuitive work required to create a visual theatrical experience based on a written text. Students will explore how to choose visual images and aural sources to inspire design ideas, analyze textual requirements, develop color palettes, and work with basic design concepts. Through lectures, class discussions, visits to museums and galleries, and research assignments students will acquire the awareness of the multiple ways designs for the theater are influenced by historical and cultural events. Class projects emphasize visual problem solving through conceptual analysis developing the students analytical and critical thinking ability. There will be twenty hours of practical lab experiemce outside of class required. Additional lab fee applies.
