THTR 202 Voice & Speech for the Actor I

In this course, students will learn fundamental voice theory and techniques that develop the actor’s breath, tone, range of voice, and the muscles of the articulators toward the health and safety of the voice while also developing the actor’s authentic voice and clarity of speech. Through an integrated approach of movement and voice, the student begins to develop balance among the body, voice, muscular activity of the articulators, and finally the thought. Voice and speech techniques employed may include those of Clifford Turner, Catherine Fitzmaurice, Kristin Linklater, Arthur Lessac and the Miller Voice Method. The bodywork may include Bartenieff Fundamentals, Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais Method, and yoga. Students will learn anatomy of the voice and the basic symbols of the International Phonetic Alphabet. Vocal practice and IPA transcription on short original texts provide the basis for application to dramatic texts and poetic interpretation of language. Additional lab fee applies.
