THTR 208 Dramatic Storytelling
This one-semester course centers Story as the foundation of dramatic writing by exploring the purpose of stories, how they are experienced by audiences, and how dramatists can use that knowledge to explore, articulate and effect meaningful social change. Through readings and viewings, students will be introduced to storytellers in various mediums who utilize Character, Theme, Action, Structure, and Plot to tell compelling, relatable stories in order to pursue social justice. Mediums explored in class and through hands on assignments include but are not limited to: film, television, video games, documentary theater, podcasts, audio dramas, and the oral tradition. Geared toward writers but open to all content creators, students will have the chance to workshop original stories and ideas in multiple mediums culminating in the creation of a final piece in the medium of their choosing centered on an issue or idea that is relevant to them and their community.
