HIST 346 Middle East: Politics, Identity and History
This class will explore the role of both state and non-state actors in this making of contemporary politics and identity in the Middle East. General themes of the course will include the causes and consequences of major transformative events such as the Arab Spring; the role of the military and Islamist groups; the place of traditional and social media; the influence of international actors; communal conflict; and the use of art and symbolism. The political, social and cultural history of the region will be explored in terms of its effect on current regional dynamics.
