Minor: Public Health, 15 Credits

Public Health is and exciting and interdisciplinary field which aims to protect and improve health on an individual, community, national and global level.  The minor is designed to provide an understanding of the multiple determinants of health and disease, while promoting social and personal responsibility in health promotion and disease prevention. The program is appropriate for students with a wide variety of interests including but not limited to, psychology or social work, communications, social justice, and politics and human rights. The minor may prepare you for graduate study in a variety of areas including health education and communication, maternal child health, epidemiology, health policy and management, environmental health and justice and migrant health.

 

Observable learning goals of program:

  1. Explain the multiple determinants of human health and well-being from a multidisciplinary perspective.
  2. Describe risk factors and modes of transmission for infectious and chronic diseases and how these diseases affect both personal and population health.
  3. Analyze factors affecting population health including: gender, race, ethnicity, social class and age.
  4. Interpret and apply primary research aimed at health promotion and improvement.
  5. Participate in the promotion of community health.
  6. Analyze ethical concerns and conflicts of interest that arise in the field of public health.
