EWL 219 Literature of Early US Republic

American literature emerges as a unique national literature between 1800 and 1865 when writers deal with issues confronting the growing United States -- nationalism, abolition of slavery, women’s rights, Native American rights.  This course will explore how these cultural issues are worked out in literature through the writings of authors such as Catherine Sedgwick, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, and Frederick Douglass.
