EWL 215 Literature of the British Empire

In this course, students study a range of literary texts, particularly those written during the Victorian period (1832-1901), that speak to the rise of the British Empire.  The course includes texts written by English authors as well as those written by authors in colonized spaces, including Africa, India, Canada, and Australia.  Whether celebrating it or resisting it, these texts are best understood when read through the historical and political lens of Empire.
