EWL 213 European Romanticism

This course explores the development of Romanticism as a literary and theoretical movement in Europe from 1780 to 1830.  We  will concentrate on the movement as it arose in Germany under French influence, and then was brought back to England by students of German philosophy and to France, Russia, and Poland by cosmopolitian intellectuals. Readings will include poetry, philosophy, essays, novels, and tales by major Romantic writers representing diverse national traditions.
