THTR 475 The Avant-Garde in Art, Film and Performance (MMCS)
This course surveys the major 20th century avant-garde movements (Expressionism, Futurism, Constructivism, Dada, Cubism, Surrealism, Modernism, Post-Modernism) based on their innovations in art, film/video, dance, music/sound, and theatre. The work of vanguard artists and performers who have been overlooked in the past by the “historical avant-garde” narrative because of their gender/sexuality and/or racial identities will be highlighted, as will themes of creativity, art and politics, war and violence, art and anti-art. Through class lectures, discussions, readings, viewings, assignments, and field trips, students will explore the ideological, historical, and aesthetic dimensions of the avant-garde from its earliest nineteenth century roots to its lasting influence today.
