IS 332 Ethics of War

Is it ever right to go to war? When is it right to wage war? What is the moral way to conduct a war? Whose responsibility is it to end a war? What happens after the war ends? This course will explore these questions and more through the analysis of the Just War Theory, and alternative theories of pacifism and realism. We will look at case studies, international humanitarian law, international human rights law, humanitarian intervention, and consider whether and how civilians can be protected. In addition, this course will explore the use of special technologies during war, such as drones, and examine the cases of asymmetric war and terrorism.
