IS 331 Global Cities
This class examines how a network of global cities is emerging as the new structure for economic, political and cultural life. Globalization has created new roles for cities and urban centers such as NYC, Mumbai, Sao Paolo and Tokyo, among others, are exercising roles previously reserved for states. Global Cities are sites of immense wealth accumulation alongside the impoverishment of a low-wage service class. Half the world now lives in cities and future urban growth is projected to take place largely in Africa and Asia. Through texts, films and field visits across NYC, students will analyze contemporary global issues through the lens of the rise of cities.
