Residency and Transfer Credit Policy
Effective date
The following policies apply to students who matriculate at MMC in Fall 2019 or later.
Residency Requirement
For degree-seeking students, the Residency Requirement indicates the number of credits students must complete at Marymount Manhattan College in order to graduate. There are two components to this requirement: the College Residency Requirement and the Major Residency Requirement. Students who initially transferred to MMC and/or plan to transfer credits to MMC during their years at the College should be aware of these residency requirements as they place limits on how many credits can be transferred.
- College Residency Requirement
All degree-seeking students must complete a minimum of sixty (60) credits at Marymount Manhattan College.
- Major Residency Requirement
It is expected that advanced course work in the major will be completed at Marymount Manhattan College. All degree-seeking students must complete a minimum of twelve (12) credits of their major in residence.
- Minor Residency Requirement
All degree-seeking students must complete a minimum of six (6) credits of their minor in residence.
Students seeking exceptions to any residency requirement must do so through written petition to the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean of the Faculty.
Transfer Credit
Marymount Manhattan College (MMC) accepts transfer credits for coursework completed at colleges and universities that are accredited by the regional agencies of the United States Commission on Higher Education (USCHE). Transfer credits from foreign universities must be evaluated by World Education Services.
Courses from non-accredited institutions may be evaluated on a case-by-case basis through MMC’s Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) program (see PLA Policy). For College policy on Conservatory or Military credits, please refer to those sections in the Catalog.
Students may bring a maximum of 60 external credits to their degree. This includes a maximum of 30 nontraditional credits awarded through Advanced Placement exams, dual enrollment high school classes, Prior Learning Assessment, foreign language exams, International Baccalaureate credit, etc. Students may earn these credits prior to matriculating at Marymount Manhattan College and/or once matriculated.
MMC requires that a minimum of sixty (60) credits be completed at the college due to the 60-credit Residency Requirement.
Transferring Credits Prior to Matriculation at Marymount Manhattan College
Requests to transfer credits earned prior to matriculation are reviewed by the Admissions Office in collaboration with the Office of Academic Advisement and academic departments.
These requests are reviewed according to the following criteria:
- To receive transfer credits, students must have earned a grade of C or higher (2.00 in a 4.00 grading system). Courses in which students received a grade below C are not transferrable to MMC.
- Grades for courses completed at other institutions prior to matriculation at MMC are not computed into the student's grade point average.
- The College does not typically award credit for courses in which the student earned a grade of P (Pass). For students transferring from colleges that give students the option of receiving either pass/fail grades or letter grades in all of their classes, pass grades (P) may be accepted in transfer. Courses that fulfill major requirements must be approved by the appropriate Department Chair. Courses that fulfill other requirements and/or electives must be approved by the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. This does not apply to colleges that award letter grades but have policies that allow students to request a limited number of pass/fail grades. In such cases, Pass grades (P) do not transfer.
- The College does not typically award credit for remedial courses.
Upon receipt of an official external transcript, the Office of Admissions works in coordination with the Office of Academic Advisement and academic departments to conduct a review of the student’s academic program to determine the maximum number of credits that may be awarded, and to evaluate how such credits may be applied to the student’s degree. This evaluation takes into consideration the following:
- The number and type of transfer credits awarded by the College will be determined based on the requirements of a student’s officially declared academic program, including all majors or minors. Any subsequent change in a student’s major or minor may affect the number of transfer credits awarded.
- Courses that appear to be equivalent to MMC courses are accepted as such; courses that do not appear to be equivalent may be considered for elective credit based on a review of the learning goals and assessments of the course(s).
- All credits applicable to the student’s current degree will be accepted but will not be included in the student’s MMC GPA.
Transferring Credits from Other Institutions for Matriculated Students
Students in good academic and disciplinary standing at Marymount Manhattan College may, with prior review and approval, take courses at other accredited institutions for credit towards their degree.
Requests for such approval are reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Transfer credit is typically awarded for courses that are deemed equivalent to specific MMC courses (e.g., PSYCH 101 or COMM 131). When there is no direct equivalency, the College may award elective credit. This is determined on a case-by-case basis.
- Courses taken at the 100 or 200 level may not transfer to MMC as 300 or 400 level courses.
- Courses taken at the 100 or 200 level may not be used to fulfill AIP requirements in the general education curriculum.
- For Seniors, permission to take courses at other institutions will only be granted for classes offered during a defined fall, winter, or spring term with a completion date no later than May 1st with a transcript received by the Registrar by May 15th. For seniors seeking permission to complete final degree requirements during the summer following their senior year, permission will only be granted for classes offered during a defined summer session with a completion date no later than August 15th with a transcript received by the Registrar August 30th.
- The specific number of transfer credits requested must be identified and approved before students take classes at another institution (see approval process below). If the number of credits listed on the official transcript that is received after completion of the course(s) differs, the College may not accept the credits in transfer.
- Students may not take a course at another institution if they have failed the same course at Marymount Manhattan College.
- Normally, permission to take a course at another institution is not granted during a semester when that course is being offered at MMC.
- Students may earn credit for a course only once, regardless of where the course was completed, with the exception of some special topics courses if approved.
- To receive transfer credits, students must earn a grade of C or higher (2.00 in a 4.00 grading system). Courses in which students receive a grade below C are not transferrable to MMC.
- No grades from other institutions are computed into the student's grade point average, with the exception of those taken through the Marymount Manhattan College/Hunter College-registration agreement or through study abroad coursework.
- Transfer credit will be awarded only upon receipt by the Registrar of an official transcript form the transfer institution.
- Academic departments may establish additional criteria for accepting courses in transfer. It is incumbent upon students to complete the process below before registering for or taking courses at another institution.
Students seeking permission to take courses at another institution must complete the following process before registering for or taking these courses:
- Download the Permission to Take Courses at Another Institution Form from the College website: https://www.mmm.edu/live/files/1903-permission-to-take-courses-at-another-institution.
- Read this form carefully and follow the instructions for completing it.
- If you are a graduating senior who is requesting permission to take courses during the summer following graduation and you would like to participate in the Commencement Ceremony, download and complete the Special Request for Permission to Participate in Commencement Ceremony Form from the College website: https://www.mmm.edu/live/files/32-special-request-for-permission-to-participate-in.
- It is incumbent upon the student to insure that an official transcript is sent to the Registrar upon completion of the course(s).
Students seeking any exceptions to the Transfer Credit Policy must do so through written petition to the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean of the Faculty.
