Learning Goals for the Major in Biomedical Sciences
After completing the major in Biomedical Sciences students will be able to:
- Demonstrate foundational knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and the social and behavioral sciences.
- Demonstrate proficiency in the core concepts required for entrance to professional biomedical graduate programs.
- Integrate and apply the natural, behavioral and social sciences to current biomedical issues.
- Effectively communicate scientific principles orally and in writing.
Required Courses (35 Credits)
Biomedical Concentration (16 Credits)
The Biomedical Concentration is a pre-professional program focused on providing students with the laboratory experiences and coursework required for entrance into medical school, both allopathic and osteopathic, as well as veterinary and dental school. It also provides ample preparation for students to enter the work force in biomedical fields immediately after graduation.
Health Science Concentration (16 Credits)
The Health Science Concentration is a pre-professional program focused on providing students with the laboratory experiences and coursework required for entrance into physician assistant programs. It also provides students with ample preparation to enter the work force in the health sciences immediately after graduation.
Prerequisite: Mathematics Courses for Science Majors (0-4 Credits)
All Science majors must take MATH 141 and receive grades of C or higher unless specifically exempted by the Department of Natural Sciences. Students not ready for Precalculus must take MATH 129 Intermediate Algebra.
Thesis Track
An optional Thesis Track is available to Biomedical Sciences majors. Information can be found under the Biology major.
