THTR 309 Voice and Speech Practicum

In this course, students continue to develop the body/voice techniques begun in THTR 202 and THTR 203. The emphasis is on advanced physical and vocal exercises that support the actor to interpret and speak culturally diverse and challenging poetic and dramatic texts of their choice. The advanced techniques include orchestration of text for breath, inflection, operative words, consonant and vowel explorations. The goal is to deepen the student’s relationship with their authentic voice while developing flexibility to speak as a character. Written work in support of the goal includes transcription of texts into IPA symbols. Additionally, students learn to collaborate and devise group projects that emphasize storytelling through pitch, rhythm, silence, listening, clarity of speech, choral speaking, relationship to others and the environment. The voice and speech techniques employed may include those of Clifford Turner, Catherine Fitzmaurice, Kristen Linklater, Arthur Lessac, and/or The Miller Technique.  The movement work may include Laban: Effort/Shape/Space, Bartenieff Fundamentals, Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais Method, and yoga. Knowledge of the anatomy pertaining to voice production and the muscles used for articulation are further developed to promote economy of effort and health and safety of the voice. Additional lab fee applies.
