AIP 316 The Ethics of Performance Reenactment and Passion Playing (CP, EP)

This course explores the ethical issues surrounding live performance reenactments, using Passion Plays as a primary case study. The course begins by reviewing the key moral systems associated with Normative Ethics. Students then use these systems to explore the specific moral issues related to Passion Plays. Students study the long history of the Passion Play genre and adaptations of Passion Plays, while also exploring the beliefs and values that underlie responses to the ethical questions they raise. In the final weeks of the semester students analyze other examples of performance reenactment across history and consider the specific moral issues each raises for performers, spectators, and historians.
