ART 318 Michelangelo

This monographic course will attempt to deal with issues of form, meaning and context in the work of the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564). The emphasis is on a modern analysis of Michelangelo and his historical and artistic context, including the importance of architecture in his work, his literary aspirations, questions of Mannerist style in his later art, and biographical issues. Through the in-depth study of this single artist, students will gain a deeper insight into ideas in artistic culture in the Renaissance.
