PHIL 251 Aesthetics and Criticism

This course introduces the student to major contributions to the philosophy of art and beauty.  It examines the role of criticism in the arts and its relation to philosophical considerations.  The first part of the course considers the aesthetic theories of Plato, Aristotle, Plotinus, Kant, Hegel, and Nietzsche. In the second part of the course the nature of criticism in the arts and its relation to aesthetic theory is explored.
