IS 376 Nationalism and State-Building

Nationalism is a powerful force in the contemporary world. The course will examine the relationship between states and nationalism, the impact of colonial rule and underdevelopment on postcolonial states, and the relationship of ethnic/religious conflict to nationalism and state-building.  The course will pay particular attention to the regions of Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East and South Asia.
