PHIL 206 The Philosophy of Life, Death, and Dying

This course will examine various metaphysical and ethical issues that arise once we begin to reflect on our mortality. What does it mean to say that a person has died? What kind of fact is that? What happens when we die? The possibility that physical death may not be the end is considered. If we were immortal, would that be desirable? Also, different attitudes toward death are evaluated. Is death an evil? How? Why? Is suicide or euthanasia ever permissible? How should the knowledge that I am going to die affect the way I live my life? What does it mean to say that a person is alive? And what is the meaning of life?
