EWL 334 Literary New York
In the course, we will explore the historical and aesthetic intersections between New York City and the craft of writing. We will study works by an array of New York-based or -focused writers in relation to their respective historical moments and their perspectives on the city. Significant attention will be paid to the history of New York City, from its beginnings as the first colony in America, through its rise as the political, economic, manufacturing, and cultural center of the country, through the present day. We will explore the ways in which New York City has always served as a microcosm of American life, as well as the ways in which it has always been “a world city.”
