EWL 213 European Romanticism
This course explores the development of Romanticism as a literary and theoretical movement in Europe from 1780 to 1850. Although the focus is on European texts, the course engages with how this literature intersects with a “global imaginary,” and is informed by networks of global trade, communication, and empire. We will examine the Romantic era as a moment and site of the modern invention and institution of both “nature” and “culture” as objects of study and as historical and ethical bases for establishing self and society. Readings will include poetry, philosophy, essays, novels, and tales by major Romantic writers representing diverse national traditions. All works will be read in English.
