COMM 354 Public Relations Writing
This course offers practical instruction in public relations writing such as press releases, media pitches, fact sheets, media kits, media statements, corporate communications writing and media proposals. Students will fuse theory and practice by learning message design strategies in a variety of formats necessary for sharing information effectively to different types of media audiences. Students will learn how to effectively write to engage interest from media and ultimately reach their target audiences. This course is designed to develop and prepare students for public relations writing that would be expected of them as entry-level public relations practitioners. Students will learn diverse styles of public relations writing to meet a variety of real-world client needs they might encounter in the workforce. This class will simulate real-life examples of public relations writing that are faced every day by those working in the industry. In addition, students will learn and understand the importance of writing in the AP style to reflect today’s media organizations. Strong writing is a baseline skill in the public relations industry. At the end of the course, students will possess the writing skillset required for an entry-level position and advancement within the public relations industry.
