ART 242 Printmaking as Activism
Throughout history artists have used their work to express political and social ideas. Printmaking, due to its reproducible nature, has often been the choice of artists to disseminate these ideas and effect change. From Goya's "Los Caprichos", a series of prints condemning the follies and foolishness of society, to Agitprop, a combination of agitation and propaganda begun by communists in Russia, to Taller de Gráfica Popular, an artist run print collective in Mexico, to more recent works by Act-Up and the Guerrilla Girls. This class will explore the history of making art to express social causes in tandem with learning the technique of silkscreen to both reflect upon these important historical movements while also focusing on the issues we face today. Additional lab fee applies.
