THTR 274 A-B Fundamentals of Musical Theatre

This yearlong course consists of two modules, one in musicianship and the other in the history of the musical. Musicianship enables students to read and analyze music in the musical theatre repertoire. The learning outcomes of this course acknowledge that students enter this class with varying levels of experience in musicianship training. The course is designed so that all students achieve these goals by the end of the year. The historical module introduces students to a range of periods and styles but does not take a strict chronological approach to the development of the form. The course uses archival video and recordings along with selected readings to present a survey and critical analysis of musical theatre history. Course includes Private Voice and Daily Dance labs, which require a separate fee.
