ECO 306 Development and Global Change

This course will examine the various meanings of 'development' from a global perspective. The failure of many countries to fulfill the promises of development, along with the emerging awareness of ecological limits, has led to the re-evaluation of the development project – the most recent incarnation of which has been 'globalization'. We will analyze how development came to be institutionalized as an international enterprise, starting from the roots of this project in colonialism. Through the lenses of feminist, ecological, peasant, and other social justice countermovements, we will also examine how development is a contested project, always in the making.
