2020-2021 Catalog

THTR 496 A-B Advanced Playwriting Techniques I & II

In this year long course students will continue to develop a technique that is individual, yet grounded in fundamental dramatic writing skills.  During the first semester students will explore the possibilities of form and content through writing, in class discussion and the reading the work of playwrights who are challenging societal norms.  At the same time students will identify and develop an idea for a full-length play (approx. 75 pages) that they will continue to work on for the rest of the year. Excerpts from these full-length drafts will be presented as staged readings as a culminating event for the year. In addition, over the course of the year, students will be required to participate in Lab Hours (four hours a week) – time and space outside of class to develop their work with their peers. Finally, students will engage in the process of production through Playwriting Projects in the Bordeau Box.
