HIST 244 African American History: The Black Atlantic

This course explores the experiences of people of African descent in the Atlantic World. While emphasis is on the experience of Africans who came to North America, comparison is made to that of black people in the Caribbean.  Among the topics covered are the Atlantic slave trade, slavery, the formation of African-American culture, life in colonial America, slave resistance and rebellions, the Haitian Revolution, the Civil War, and emancipation.
