AIP 311 Cultural, Ethnic and Racial Perspectives in Psychology (CP, REP)

This course will investigate how cultural, racial and ethnic beliefs influence distinct behavioral and psychological manifestations. We will discuss how cultural differences impact the interpretation and translation of current psychological findings across cultures.  For example, how can some traditional practices such as genital mutilation influence subsequent behaviors and psychological states of being? What factors must we consider in order to counsel from an ethnically sensitive perspective?  How can a specialist separate “abnormal behavior” from a cultural norm without confusing the two?
