BIOL 240 Cellular and Molecular Biology

This is a lecture and laboratory course focusing on the principles and techniques of molecular and cellular biology with an emphasis on recent advances in molecular biology. Topics include the structure and function of the cell and its subcellular organelles, biological macromolecules, enzymes, biomembranes, bioenergetics, DNA replication, protein synthesis and cell motility. Techniques include aseptic technique and the handling of microbes, isolation and purification of nucleic acids, construction, selection and analysis of recombinant DNA molecules, restriction mapping, immobilization and hybridization of nucleic acids, labeling methods of nucleic acid probes, PCR and basic cell culture. Three-hour lecture; three-hour lab. Additional lab fee applies.
