Service Animals
As established by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Fair Housing Act (FHA), Section 504 of the Federal Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and New York State and New York City legislation, a service animal (SA) is permitted wherever the public has access and is considered a reasonable accommodation in residences with a “no pet” policy. Service animals are therefore permitted on MMC’s main campus and in MMC residence halls. In accordance with the ADA and FHA, the College may restrict service animals or suggest alternate arrangements in locations or circumstances where the animal may pose a safety or health hazard.
We encourage students with SAs to request optional registration through MMC to aid in the animal’s smooth transition to campus and / or the residences and so that Campus Safety is aware of the presence of the SA in an emergency. For the full SA policy and additional information, eligible students should contact the Office of Disability Services: disabilityservices@mmm.edu or 212.517.0596.
Please note: When it is not apparent that the animal is a trained service animal, individuals may ask two questions, as permitted by the ADA:
(1) Is the dog a service animal required because of a disability?
(2) What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?
