College Level Examination Program (CLEP)
Students who are proficient in a foreign language may have their skills and fluency evaluated by examination for possible transfer credit. Several examinations may be considered:
- College Level Examination Program (CLEP) French, German, or Spanish: Students may earn 6 credits for Level 1 proficiency, or 9 credits for Level 2 proficiency. Minimum scores for each level vary among the languages.
NOTE: MMC does not accept credits for CLEP exams taken in subject areas other than a foreign language.
- NYU Language Proficiency Testing: students may earn between 3 and 12 credits, according to the following guidelines. Students earn 3 credits for first semester equivalence; 6 credits for second semester equivalence; 9 credits for third semester equivalence, and 12 credits for fourth semester equivalence.
- Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) guidelines: Students earn 3 credits for A1 level of proficiency; 6 credits for an A2 level of proficiency; 9 credits for B1 level of proficiency, and 12 credits for B2 level of proficiency.
Official scores must be sent directly to MMC by the testing agency. Prior to registering for a language exam, students should contact Student Success Advising to discuss eligibility and request permission. Students may receive credit equivalences for language exams only after they have completed 15 credits at MMC and before they have completed 105 credits. Students who have taken exams previously without earning a qualifying score may be denied permission to retake the same exam.
