HIST 218 The Making of the Modern World
This course will examine the history of the twentieth century from a global perspective. It will emphasize the material and cultural processes of modernization and globalization as they have variously affected peoples throughout the world. After providing background on 19th century European and other industrializations, nation state developments and imperialism, the course concentrates on the 20th century: the first half century of war, revolution and international capitalist collapse, and the second half with its emergence of new patterns of political, social, and economic formation, as well as attempts to understand our contemporary situation. This course satisfies General Education, liberal arts and International Studies major requirements.
