Grade Waiver Policy
Students may petition for a grade waiver for courses taken at MMC in which they earned grades of D, F, or WF, subject to the following conditions:
Course and Credit Limits:
- Students may be granted a grade waiver for up to four courses, with a maximum total of 15 credits.
- If a student petitions for a waiver of the grade from a failed LINK 101 class by passing LINK 102, the LINK 101 course will not count as one of the four allowable waivers.
Exclusions
- Grade waivers will not be approved for a course in which the student received an unofficial withdrawal (UW grade).
- Students must repeat the identical course for which the original grade was earned at MMC. If the course is no longer offered, a suitable substitute may be approved by the divisional chair.
- Under no circumstances will a student be permitted to petition for a grade waiver for a course in which a prior grade waiver was granted.
- Credits earned through Internships, Independent Study, Special Topics, Prior Learning Assessment, Pass/Fail grade options, Study Abroad, Consortial Agreements (e.g., with Hunter College/Pace University), or other non-traditional means are not eligible for grade waivers.
- Grade waivers will not be granted if the F grade was due to a violation of the College’s Academic Honesty Policy.
Application Process:
- All grade waiver petitions must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar by the last day of the semester in which the repeated course is taken.
- Grade waiver petitions are reviewed and approved by the Registrar.
Post-Approval Conditions:
- Upon completion of the repeated course, the new grade will replace the original grade in the calculation of the term and cumulative GPAs, regardless of whether the new grade is higher or lower. Note: If a student withdraws or receives an unofficial withdrawal from the repeated course, they will not be eligible for the grade waiver.
- The original grade will remain on the student’s transcript but will not be used to calculate the GPA. It will be marked to indicate that a grade waiver was granted.
- If the new grade replaces a D, no additional credit will be granted.
Status Check:
- Submission of the grade waiver request does not guarantee approval. Students should contact the Office of Student Success Advising to check the status of their request. If approved, the waiver will be indicated by a specific grade code (e.g., D#, F#) on MMC Connect under Academic Profile/“Academic History.”
