Study Abroad Opportunities

2023-2024 Catalog

Marymount Manhattan College students may spend a semester, a full academic year, or a summer or January term studying abroad. The College offers the opportunity to earn academic credits in programs throughout the world. Study abroad is an intellectually stimulating and life-changing experience and enhances learning in several ways: students gain an international perspective on world events, experience and learn to enjoy another culture, and enhance their cross-cultural competency. Students also learn about themselves and boost their self-confidence and independence. Finally, studying abroad can make an impressive addition to students' resumes and help them stand out from the crowd as a job candidate. Interdisciplinary in nature, study abroad prepares students to interact with other peoples and cultures.

The College can help students find a study abroad program that suits their interests. We participate in two consortia of colleges that, collectively, offer a wide variety of choices in about 50 countries. In addition, in Italy we offer programs with the Umbra Institute in Perugia and the International Studies Institute in Florence.

To participate in a study abroad program, at the time of application students must have a cumulative MMC grade point average of 2.8 or above; must have completed a minimum of 12 credits (one full semester) at MMC, and must have declared a major. The College recommends that students consider study abroad in their third year; however, some sophomores and seniors go abroad as well. Graduating seniors should refer to the “Information and Recommendations” section under Commencement and Graduation in the Center for Student Services area in the academic catalogue.

All study abroad credits and the grades earned are recorded on the students’ MMC transcripts and are included in their GPA. Students must arrange to have transcripts from the host institution sent to MMC immediately upon the conclusion of the study abroad program. Courses abroad cannot be taken for a pass/fail grade. Students are encouraged to start planning for study abroad at least one year in advance. The first step is to make an appointment with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, who along with the Executive Director of Academic Operations, works with students to ensure that they select the best program to meet their academic needs and complete the process for having academic credits awarded by MMC for study abroad courses. Information is also available on the MMC Web site at www.mmm.edu/academics/study-abroad.php.

Students who are eligible to receive financial aid to study at MMC are generally eligible to apply that aid to the cost of study abroad. MMC scholarships are not applicable to study abroad unless used for an approved MMC bilateral exchange program.
