RS 332 Judaism

This course provides an introduction to the texts, beliefs, and practices of the Jewish tradition.  This will include in-depth examination of the Bible (Tanakh) and its composition, developments in the Second Temple and diaspora periods (the Rabbinic tradition and the emergence of the synagogue), trends in medieval and early modern Judaism (mysticism, messianism, and Hasidism), and the profound challenges posed by the modern period. Jewish practice and its historical and textual precedents will also be a focus in the course.
