This is a workshop for songwriters with some previous experience. It draws lessons from U.S. genres that traditionally feature live playing and singing, as opposed to electronic, recording studio and/or digital music-making technologies. Each iteration of the course will examine selective genres - blues, country, bluegrass, rock, R&B, soul, funk, gospel, jazz, Tejano, Latin Pop, American Songbook, doo-wop, folk music, zydeco, Cajun, Musical Theater, boogaloo, surf – that share music and lyric components which can be applied across genres. Students in the class will have the freedom to write in genres, forms and styles they choose, applying lessons in songwriting elements as music-makers and lyricists. Additional materials fee applies.
