PHR 207 Visual Culture

This course explores the construction of society, politics, and selfhood through images broadly. It asks, “How do images and visual literacy impact who we become?” “How do we use imagery to negotiate our private and public lives?” and “What is the history of visual culture and how does it manifest in the age of the Internet?” Students use video, photography, drawing, zines, sketching, collage, memes, etc., to pursue these questions both within New York City and virtual worlds. Herein, students will draw upon insights from a wide range of disciplines to analyze the relation of visuality and a just society.
