PHR 107 Introduction to Criminal Justice

The purpose of this course is to survey and analyze the origin, development, and classification of the criminal law. The principal topics to be covered will be grouped into the following areas: crime as a legal concept, the objectives of punishment, an overview of the American criminal justice system, the trial, the role of the attorneys, judges, and the jury, the bail system, plea bargaining, sentencing, jails, prisons, probation, and parole. Visits to courts and prisons will be included in the course.
