EWL 110 Reading World Literature I

This course is the first of a two-part sequence in World Literature, and covers the literature of the classical age through the eighteenth century.  Students will begin with a historical overview of the ancient world and its civilizations, including discussion of the invention of writing and the earliest literatures, and will then study select works from the major cultures and traditions of the ancient, classical, medieval, and early modern periods. The course is organized around the genres of epic, tragedy, lyric poetry, and tale. All works will be read in English.
