PHR 306 Culture and Ideology

“Culture” is everywhere, but what exactly is it? Is it the arts? Language? Everyday life? The structure of thought shared by people? Or the beliefs shared by people who are bounded by a specific location? This course analyzes the concept of culture through both theories of culture and empirical research. Specifically, it investigates how social, economic, political and historical processes produce culture and how this is reproduced by people in practice. This investigation can include a broad range of topics, ranging from food, art, cities, and the body to religion, history, knowledge, and nature.
