ART 240 Drawing on Location: New York City

Using various locations as our classroom, students focus on describing and capturing visual, social, cultural, psychological, and historical characteristics of our urban environment. The instructor works with students on an individual basis, and students may choose to concentrate on a specific area of interest such as the figure, gesture, architecture or perspective. The visual language of composition will be emphasized. Students may work in any medium and instruction will be given in a variety of materials including pencil, charcoal, pastel and pen-and-ink. Each session begins with a discussion and demonstration and ends with an informal critique. Locations include South Street Seaport, Chinatown, night court, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and Grand Central Terminal. This course is open to all students, major, minors and non-majors.
