ART 111 Drawing I
This course introduces students to the importance of drawing as a visual language. Drawing principles and techniques will be introduced in relation to perception and observation. Lectures, demonstrations and class critiques develop the student's analytical and critical abilities to understand both historical and contemporary drawing. Da Vinci, Ingres and Delacroix up to and including Picasso and Hockney are studied as exemplars of the discipline. Students explore a variety of media, including pencil, charcoal, contè crayon, and pen and ink. They visit museums and galleries and write response papers based on direct contact with the works of art. Students will be encouraged to experiment with color, and to explore a wide range of varied paper surfaces.
